Hafez · Ghazal 458 · O heart, when you are lost in wine
Hafez reminds you that true wealth is not counted in gold. A heart that loves wholeheartedly is richer than Qarun, and the crown is earned by the jewel of your own nature, not by lineage or title. If you are standing before a road that asks for courage, he says the first step is to give yourself to it fully, as Majnun gave himself to Leyli. Stop letting the worries of the days wear at you. Look at the gifts you already hold; they are reason enough to be glad.
O heart, at the moment you are ruined by rose-coloured wine,
without gold or treasure you will have a hundred times the splendour of Qarun.
In that station where the seat of honour is given to the poor,
I expect that you will stand above them all in rank.
On the road to Leyli's dwelling, where there are many dangers,
the first condition of setting foot is that you be Majnun.
I have shown you the point of love; take care, make no mistake,
or else, when you look, you will find yourself outside the circle.
The caravan has gone, and you are asleep, and the desert lies ahead;
how will you go? whom will you ask the way? what will you do? how will you be?
If you seek the royal crown, show the jewel of your own nature,
even if you are of the line of Jamshid and Fereydun.
Drink down a goblet and scatter its last drops over the heavens;
how long, how long will your heart bleed from the grief of the days?
Hafez, do not lament your poverty, for if this is your poetry,
no glad heart would wish you to be sad.
