Hafez · Ghazal 453 · You who are proud of yourself

The faal · letting go

This short ghazal gently teases the part of us that is too proud and too careful to love. If you have been holding back, guarding your reputation and your reasoning, Hafez suggests that there is another kind of intoxication worth knowing, deeper than any ordinary pleasure. Love may cost you a little pride and a few sighs, but it heals in a way cleverness cannot. Let go, for a while, of worrying about name and shame. Open the door to feeling.

The ghazal in English

O you who are always proud of yourself,
if you have no love, you are excused.

Do not go near the madmen of love,
for you are famous for your excellent reason.

There is no drunkenness of love in your head;
go, you are only drunk on the water of the grape.

A pale face and a sigh full of pain:
these are the lovers' cure for their sickness.

Hafez, let go of your name and your shame;
ask for a cup of wine, for you are hung over.
