Hafez · Ghazal 45 · A companion free of flaw
Hafez reminds you that your life is precious and has no substitute, so do not spend it waiting. Travel light, keep good and simple companions, a cup and a book of poems, and turn what you know into action, for knowledge left unused only breeds weariness. Do not blame the stars for your fortune or wait for them to change; take hold of what is beautiful and near. The world is unsteady, but you can be steady in your love and your delight. Begin today, gently, with what is in front of you.
In this age the only companion free of flaw
is a flask of pure wine and a book of ghazals.
Travel alone and light, for the pass of safety is narrow;
take up the cup, for precious life has no substitute.
It is not only I who am weary of the world for doing nothing;
the learned too are weary from knowledge without action.
To the eye of reason, on this tumultuous road,
the world and its affairs are unstable and of little worth.
Take hold of the curl of a moon-faced one, and do not tell the tale
that good and ill fortune come from the sway of Venus and Saturn.
My heart had great hope of union with your face,
but on the road of life, death waylays hope.
In no age will they find him sober,
for our Hafez is drunk with the wine of pre-eternity.
