Hafez · Ghazal 447 · Do not keep this grudge

The faal · friendship

A long friendship deserves more than a grudge, and Hafez asks for reconciliation with warmth and a little humour. If something has come between you and someone you have known for years, consider letting it go: good counsel is worth more than any treasure you could guard. Do not judge others harshly, either, for their path may be part of a larger design. Offer help where it is needed, share what you have, and let old affection be renewed.

The ghazal in English

Come, do not keep this grudge against us,
for you owe something to an old friendship.

Listen to advice, for this pearl is far better
than the jewel you keep in your treasury.

But when will you show your face to the rends,
you whose mirror is the sun and the moon?

O sheikh, do not speak ill of the rends, and take care,
for you are holding a grudge against God's decree.

Are you not afraid of my fiery sigh?
Do you know you are wearing a woollen cloak?

Come to the aid of the penniless in their hangover,
for God's sake, if you have any of last night's wine.

I have seen nothing sweeter than your verse, Hafez,
by the Quran that you carry in your breast.
