Hafez · Ghazal 40 · The tavern door is open
المنة لله که در میکده، باز استزان رو که مرا بر در او، روی نیاز است
خم‌ها، همه در جوش و خروش‌اند ز مستیوان می که در آن‌جاست، حقیقت، نه مجاز است
از وی، همه، مستی و غرور است و تکبروز ما همه بیچارگی و عجز و نیاز است
رازی که بر غیر نگفتیم و نگوییمبا دوست بگوییم که او محرم راز است
شرح شکن زلف خم اندر خم جانانکوته نتوان کرد که این قصه، دراز است
بار دل مجنون و خم طره لیلیرخساره محمود و کف پای ایاز است
بردوخته‌ام دیده چو باز از همه عالمتا دیده من بر رخ زیبای تو، باز است
در کعبه کوی تو، هر آن‌کس که بیایداز قبله ابروی تو در عین نماز است
ای مجلسیان، سوز دل «حافظ» مسکیناز شمع بپرسید که در سوز و گداز است
Good news opens this verse: the door is open. Whatever you are bringing, come to it honestly, with your need showing, for that is what Hafez does. The secret you have told no one can be told to the Friend, who keeps it safe. Hafez also reminds you that in love the usual ranks dissolve, as when the great king Mahmud laid his cheek at the foot of Ayaz. Close your eyes to distractions and keep them on what you love; simply turning towards it is already a kind of prayer.
Praise be to God that the tavern door is open,
since my face of need is turned towards that door.
The jars are all seething and roaring with drunkenness,
and the wine that is there is the truth, not a figure of speech.
From Him comes all intoxication, pride and grandeur;
from us comes all helplessness, weakness and need.
The secret we have not told to others, and will not tell,
we will tell to the Friend, for He keeps the secret.
The account of the beloved's curl, bend upon bend,
cannot be cut short, for this story is long.
The burden of Majnun's heart and the curve of Layla's tress
are the cheek of Mahmud and the sole of Ayaz's foot.
Like a falcon I have sewn my eyes shut to the whole world,
so long as my eyes are open to your lovely face.
In the Kaaba of your lane, whoever comes
is at the very heart of prayer, facing the qibla of your eyebrow.
O companions of the gathering, of the burning heart of poor Hafez
ask the candle, which is burning and melting.
