Hafez · Ghazal 392 · Do you know what good fortune is?

The faal · friendship

Hafez gives you his definition of good fortune: to see the face of the one you love, and to prefer humble closeness to them over any throne. Friendship is precious, he says, and parting from dear ones is harder than anything. So do not let the chance slip by. Say what you feel, open like the bud in the garden, and value the company you have now, for this world is a lodging with two doors and we pass through it quickly. Reach out to those you love while you can.

The ghazal in English

Do you know what good fortune is? To see the friend's face,
to choose begging in his street over kingship.

It is easy to give up hope of life itself, but
from dear friends one can hardly bear to part.

I will go to the garden like the bud, with a tight heart,
and there, with good name, tear open a shirt.

Now, like the breeze, telling hidden secrets to the rose,
now hearing the secret of love's play from the nightingales.

Do not let kissing the friend's lip slip from your hands at the start,
for in the end you will grow weary of biting your hand and lip.

Count our company a gift, for once we pass
this lodging of two doors, we cannot meet again.

It seems Hafez has slipped from Shah Yahya's memory;
O Lord, remind him of the care of dervishes.
