If something in your life feels closed, like a bud that has not yet opened, Hafez speaks directly to you: do not lose heart, for the breath of morning and the breeze will help. He also reminds you of what lasts. Gold and silver pass to others, but the pearl of understanding you can carry with you. Seek company that matches your spirit, and if a promise seems forgotten, trust that a noble heart remembers. Be grateful for the gifts you already hold: your words, your sound nature, your love.
I hold the Magian elder's ruling, and it is an old saying,
that wine is forbidden where the friend is not your companion.
I will tear this cloak of hypocrisy; what else can I do?
For the soul, the company of the unlike is a bitter torment.
In hope that the beloved's lip might scatter a sip on me,
for years now I have stayed at the tavern door.
Perhaps my long service has slipped from his memory;
O breeze of dawn, remind him of the old pledge.
If after a hundred years you pass over my grave,
my crumbled bones will rise from the clay, dancing.
The heart-stealer took our heart at first with a hundred hopes;
surely a noble nature does not forget a promise.
Tell the bud: “Do not be heavy-hearted that your work is closed,
for you will find help from the breath of morning and the breathing of the breeze.”
O heart, seek your healing at another door;
a lover's pain is not mended by a physician's cures.
Learn the pearl of true knowledge, so you can take it with you,
for the hoard of gold and silver is the share of others.
The trap is strong, unless God's grace becomes your friend;
otherwise Adam will not win against the outcast Satan.
Hafez, if you have no silver and gold, what of it? Be grateful:
what is better than the gift of graceful speech and a sound nature?
