Hafez · Ghazal 36 · Since your curl fell to the breeze

The faal · love

Your heart may feel scattered, like dust carried on the breeze, by a love or longing that will not let you go. Hafez does not fight it. He sees that even a shadow of the beloved can bring life back to tired bones, as the breath of Jesus did. And he finds peace in the closing thought: the bond between him and his sorrow was made in the oldest covenant, before time. Nothing you feel is outside love's care. Rest in that, stay near what you love, and let it revive you.

The ghazal in English

Since the tip of your curl has fallen into the hand of the breeze,
my love-crazed heart has fallen in two from grief.

Your sorcerer eye is the very draft of magic,
but it is true that this copy has fallen languid.

In the bend of your curl, do you know what that black mole is?
A dot of ink that has fallen within the loop of the letter jim.

Your musky curl in the paradise garden of your cheek,
what is it? A peacock that has fallen into the Garden of Bliss.

My heart, in longing for your face, O companion of my soul,
is dust of the road that has fallen into the hand of the breeze.

Like dust, this earthly body cannot rise
from the head of your lane, for it has fallen there so heavily.

The shadow of your stature on my body, O you with the breath of Jesus,
is a spirit's reflection that has fallen on decayed bones.

The one whose only station was the Kaaba, from the memory of your lip,
I saw at the tavern door, where he has fallen and stayed.

Between lost Hafez and your grief, O dear friend,
there is a oneness that came about in the ancient covenant.
