Hafez · Ghazal 339 · The image of your face
The whole ghazal is about watching and welcoming. Hafez keeps a lamp lit in the window of his eye all night, waiting for good news, and gathers his best treasures to scatter at the beloved's arrival. If you are expecting someone or something, this verse encourages you to prepare a place for it and keep your light burning. Offer what is precious in your heart, and ask gently for kindness in return. The waiting itself is a kind of devotion that will be seen.
When the image of your face passes through the garden of my eye,
my heart comes to the window of the eye to look.
I see no view worthy of your resting-place;
there is only me in all the world, and this set corner of my eye.
Come, for to scatter rubies and pearls at your arrival
I carry them from the treasury of my heart to the window of my eye.
At dawn my flowing tears had ruin in mind,
had my heart's blood not caught hold of the hem of my eye.
On the first day I saw your face, my heart said:
"If any harm comes of this, my blood is on the eye's account."
Last night, in hope of good news of union with you, until dawn
I set the bright lamp of my eye in the path of the wind.
By your kindness, do not strike the aching heart of Hafez
with the heart-piercing, people-felling arrow of your eye.
