Hafez · Ghazal 320 · Last night, a flood of tears

A sleepless night of longing slowly turns, in this ghazal, into a sweet hour of music, wine and good omens for friends. Hafez is himself taking a faal here, eye on the saqi and ear on the harp. Whatever has kept you awake, this verse suggests the night will not end in tears. Let your thoughts turn toward what you love, and then outward, toward the long life and good fortune of the people dear to you. Blessing others is a quiet way of being blessed.
Last night with a flood of tears I was barring the road to sleep,
tracing a picture on water in memory of your down.
The Friend's eyebrow before my eyes, and my cloak burned,
I was drinking a cup in memory of the corner of the prayer-niche.
Every bird of thought that leapt from the branch of speech
I struck back into song with the plectrum of your forelock.
The face of my beloved was shining before my eyes,
and from afar I was kissing the cheek of the moonlight.
My eye on the saqi's face and my ear on the harp's song,
I was taking an omen on this matter with eye and ear.
Until the break of dawn I was weaving the image of your face
on the loom of my sleepless eye.
To the tune of this ghazal of mine the saqi raised the bowl;
I was singing this song and drinking pure wine.
Hafez's hour was sweet, and I was casting an omen of wishes and delight
upon the name of my friends' long life and good fortune.
