A bird of good omen has arrived with a happy message, and Hafez greets it eagerly: welcome, what news, where is the friend? This ghazal opens your faal with expectancy and blessing, and prays that grace will escort the caravan you are waiting for. It also offers a lovely thought: a story that has no beginning has no end, so what is truly rooted in you will not simply be over. Let yourself hope. Turn your face towards what you love, as one turns towards the prayer niche, and let time show its days.
Welcome, bird of blessed step and happy message!
Welcome! What news? Where is the friend? Which way?
O Lord, may eternal grace escort this caravan,
through which the enemy fell into the snare and the beloved came to our wish.
The story of my beloved and me has no end;
what has no beginning will not accept an ending.
The rose has gone too far in its pride: show your face for a moment;
the cypress is preening, which is not right: for God's sake, walk out gracefully.
The beloved's curl, like a zunnar, commands:
"Go, sheikh, for the cloak is now forbidden on our body."
The bird of my spirit, which used to sing from the top of the Lote Tree,
was at last cast into the snare by the bait of your mole.
Sleep is not fitting for my sick eyes:
how should one sleep whose wasting sickness is killing him?
I said, "You show no pity to me, your sincere one."
That is my claim; and here you are, and there are the days.
If Hafez inclines towards your eyebrow, it is fitting:
the people of the Word take their place in the corner of the mihrab.
