Hafez · Ghazal 306 · If I find the way to your lane
Hafez stands at the door with nothing in his hands, unsure where to go or what to do, weary of the times. If you feel this way, notice what the ghazal does with that feeling. Sorrow chose his heart because it was humble and open, and love keeps that heart polished like a mirror, clean of the rust that events leave behind. Bear what you must with patience, and keep your deepest feelings for those who can understand them. The way to the lane you seek may open sooner than you think.
If I find the chance to reach your lane,
by the good fortune of union with you my affairs will come right.
Those two graceful narcissi have carried off my calm;
those two kohl-darkened sorcerers have carried off my ease.
Since at your door I, poor, without gold or strength,
have no way in any respect to come in or go out,
where shall I go, what shall I do, where shall I seek a remedy?
For I have grown weary of the sorrow and cruelty of the times.
I, broken and in a sorry state, will find life
in the moment I am slain by the sword of your sorrow.
Your sorrow found no place more ruined than my heart,
so it made its lodging in my narrow heart.
Since the heart is polished by the jewels of your love,
every mirror of it is kept clean of the rust of events.
What crime have I committed, O soul and heart, in your presence,
that the devotion of heartless me is not accepted?
Make peace with the pain of love and be silent, Hafez;
do not reveal the secrets of love before the people of reason.
