Hafez · Ghazal 29 · With your image, what need of wine?

The faal · the present moment

Something dear may seem to have slipped away, and without it even sweet things taste of nothing. Yet Hafez tells his eye to wake up: what you love passes before you openly, and is veiled only from those who do not look with love. The valley and plain are green. Hold on to the real water that is here, close at hand, for so much of what the world promises is mirage. Do not fill your head with advice just now; let some music in, and be gentle with yourself.

The ghazal in English

With the image of you, what need have we of wine?
Tell the jar to go its way, for the wine-store is in ruins.

Though it be the wine of paradise, pour it out, for without the Friend
every sweet drink you give me is sheer torment.

Alas, the beloved has gone, and in my weeping eyes
the drawing of the image of her down is a picture on water.

Wake up, O eye, for no one can be safe
from this ceaseless flood in this house of sleep.

The beloved passes before you openly, but
because strangers are looking, she goes veiled.

Since the rose saw the grace of the sweat on your coloured cheek,
it burns with longing and, from its heart's grief, is drowned in rosewater.

Valley and plain are green; come, let us not let go
of the water that is here, for the whole world is a mirage.

Do not look in the corner of my brain for a place for advice,
for this corner is full of the murmur of harp and rebab.

What of it if Hafez is a lover, a rend and an eye for beauty?
Many strange ways belong to the days of youth.
