Hafez · Ghazal 287 · Everything about you is lovely

The faal · devotion

This ghazal is pure praise, a lover delighting in everything about the beloved. Its gift to you lies in the last lines: though the desert of seeking holds dangers on every side, Hafez walks on happily, carried by devotion. If your path is uncertain, let what you love be your companion on it, and let it make even the hard stretches sweet. Contentment does not wait for the flood of trials to end; it is found by keeping your heart turned towards what you cherish.

The ghazal in English

O you whose every form is pleasing and every place you are is sweet,
my heart delights in your sweet, sugar-chewing coquetry.

Your being is as delicate as a fresh rose petal;
like the cypress in the meadow of paradise, you are lovely from head to foot.

Your ways and airs are sweet, your down and mole are charming;
your eyes and brows are beautiful, your stature and height are lovely.

The rose garden of my imagination is full of your images,
and the senses of my heart are glad with your jasmine-scented curl.

On the road of love, where there is no way past the flood of trials,
I have made my heart content with longing for you.

How can I thank your eye, which with that languor
makes my pain well again through your lovely face?

Though in the desert of seeking there is danger on every side,
heartless Hafez walks on happily in his devotion to you.
