Someone or something you love feels far away, and this ghazal is a call to come back. Hafez asks the beloved to be the companion of his narrowed heart and the keeper of his secrets. If someone is anxious for you, let them know you are on your way, safe and well. Keep your bond sealed and true, as a casket keeps its jewel, and send your feeling after your words so that no dust of worry settles between you. What you are looking for stays near those who see clearly; remain within their sight.
Come back, and be the soul's companion to my narrowed heart;
be the keeper of hidden secrets for this burnt one.
Of that wine they sell in the tavern of love,
give us two or three cups, and say, "Let it be Ramadan."
Since you have set fire to your cloak, O wayfaring knower,
make an effort, and be the leader of the world's rends.
The heart's beloved, who said, "My heart is anxious for you":
tell her, "I am coming now, safe and well; watch for me."
My heart has turned to blood from longing for that life-giving ruby;
O casket of love, stay as you are, under the same seal and sign.
So that no dust of sorrow settles on her heart,
O flood of my tears, run on after the letter.
Hafez, who longs for the world-revealing cup:
tell him, "Stay in the sight of the Asaf whose throne is Jamshid's."
