This is the ghazal of enough. Hafez sits by the stream, watches life flowing past, and finds that what he has is sufficient: one true companion, a little shade, the gift of his own voice. Perhaps you are asking whether you should reach for more. The answer here is gentle: look first at what is already with you. The friend is beside you, so what need is there to search further? Contentment is not giving up; it is noticing the riches you already hold.
A rose-cheeked one from the rose-garden of the world is enough for us;
from this meadow, the shade of that walking cypress is enough for us.
Far be it from me to keep company with hypocrites;
of all the world's heavy things, a heavy cup is enough for us.
They grant the palace of paradise as a reward for deeds;
we who are rends and beggars, the Magian cloister is enough for us.
Sit on the bank of the stream and watch life passing by,
for this hint of the passing world is enough for us.
Look at the cash of the world's market, and the world's hurt:
if this profit and loss is not enough for you, it is enough for us.
The friend is with us: what need is there to seek for more?
The blessing of that soul's companion's company is enough for us.
For God's sake, do not send me from your door to paradise,
for the head of your lane, of all being and place, is enough for us.
Hafez, to complain of the spring of our lot is unjust;
a nature like water and flowing ghazals are enough for us.
