Hafez · Ghazal 266 · My heart has bolted
This ghazal ends with one of Hafez's clearest counsels: between you and what you love there is no wall but yourself. Perhaps you have been waiting for a door to open, a sign, a permission. The voice from the tavern says: be at peace with what is given, and do not run from your fate. Come with open hands and honest need; devotion is a firmer handhold than any cloak of piety. Step aside from your own worry, and you may find that the way was open all along.
My heart has bolted after a gypsy-like charmer who stirs up trouble,
false in her promises, deadly in her ways, a weaver of colours.
May a thousand garments of piety and cloaks of abstinence
be offered up for the torn shirts of the moon-faced ones.
I will carry the thought of your mole with me to the grave,
so that from your mole my dust will be mixed with ambergris.
The angel does not know what love is; O saqi,
ask for a cup, and pour rosewater on the dust of Adam.
Bind a wine-bowl to my shroud, so that at the dawn of the Gathering
I may drive with wine the terror of the Day of Resurrection from my heart.
Poor and weary I have come to your court; have mercy,
for I have no handhold but my devotion to you.
Come, for last night the voice from the tavern said to me:
"Stay in the station of contentment, and do not run from fate."
Between lover and beloved there is no barrier;
you yourself are your own veil, Hafez: rise up from between.
