Hafez · Ghazal 262 · Who will speak again
You may be carrying something in your heart that few around you seem to understand, and you wonder who will speak for it. Hafez answers that wisdom is not always found in learned talk; sometimes it waits in humbler places, like a sage sitting quietly in his jar. Your heart, like a bud, is waiting for the right breath before it opens, and it cannot be forced. Return again and again to what you love and keep faith with it, and in its own time it will open.
Who will speak again of the state of those whose hearts are bleeding?
And who will demand again from the heavens the blood of the wine-jar?
Let the drunken narcissus be ashamed before the eyes of the wine-worshippers,
if it should ever bloom again.
Who but the wine, that Plato sitting in the jar,
will tell us again the secret of wisdom?
Whoever, like the tulip, has passed the cup around
will wash his face in blood again for this cruelty.
My heart will not open like a rosebud
unless it catches again the scent of a cup from her lips.
The harp has spoken so much behind the veil:
cut its strings of hair, so it will not wail again.
Around the sacred house of the wine-jar Hafez,
if he does not die, will run again upon his head.
