This ghazal speaks of complete devotion. Hafez is willing to let the wind carry off everything else if he can see the one face that matters. If you are giving your whole heart to something, he offers two counsels. First, nothing is reached without striving, and the best reward comes from following a true guide with humility. Second, be mindful of how delicate the hearts of others are; do not burden the one you love with your complaints. Keep faith with your guide, let go of what is unimportant, and let your love be gentle.
Show your face, and carry my own being from my memory;
tell the wind to carry off the whole harvest of the burned.
Since we have given heart and eyes to the storm of affliction,
say: "Come, flood of grief, and carry the house away from its foundations."
Who will ever smell her curl, fragrant as raw ambergris? Far from it!
O heart of raw hopes, put these words out of your mind.
Tell my breast: "Outshine the flame of the fire temple of Fars";
tell my eye: "Take away the lustre of the Tigris at Baghdad."
May the fortune of the Magian elder last, for the rest is easy;
tell anyone else: "Go, and forget my name."
Without striving on this road you will reach nowhere;
if you want a reward, bring your obedience to the master.
On the day of my death, give me the promise of seeing you for one breath,
and then carry me, carefree and free, to the grave.
Last night she said, "I will kill you with my long lashes";
O Lord, take the thought of cruelty from her mind.
Hafez, think of how delicate the beloved's heart is;
go, and take this lament and outcry away from her court.
