The faal · good news

This is a ghazal of good news. A banner of victory has arrived, the veil has been drawn from fortune's face, and justice has answered those who called for it. Hafez recalls Joseph, who rose from the bottom of the well to the height of the moon in spite of those who wished him harm. If you have been through a long and difficult time, this reading tells you that the tide is turning and the road is becoming safe again. Stay awake to it: keep up the quiet practices that brought you here, for they are what opened the door.

The ghazal in English

Come, for the king's victorious banner has arrived;
the promise of conquest and good tidings has reached the sun and moon.

The beauty of fortune has drawn the veil from victory's face;
perfect justice has come to the aid of the one who cries for redress.

Now heaven will turn sweetly, for the moon has come;
now the world will go as the heart desires, for the king has arrived.

Now the caravans of heart and knowledge will be safe from highwaymen,
for the man of the road has come.

The dear one of Egypt, in spite of his jealous brothers,
rose from the bottom of the well and reached the height of the moon.

Where is the Sufi of Antichrist deeds and heretic look?
Tell him: burn, for the Mahdi, refuge of the faith, has come.

Breeze, tell what has befallen me in this grief of love
from the fire of a burning heart and the smoke of sighs.

In longing for your face, O king, this captive of separation suffered
what the blade of straw suffers from the fire.

Do not go to sleep, for Hafez has reached the court of acceptance
through the midnight litany and the lessons of dawn.
