Hafez · Ghazal 24 · Do not ask obedience of me
Your way may not look conventional to others, but Hafez says some loves are written on the first day of time, and once you have washed in the spring of love, other cares fall away. The heart of this verse is a gentle promise: here, before mercy, even a mountain weighs less than an ant, so do not despair of the door of mercy, whatever has come before. Keep your humour as he does, smiling that his Solomon's kingdom holds only wind. Hope is never closed to you.
Do not ask obedience, vows and good conduct of me, drunk as I am,
for I was famed for draining the cup on the day of Alast.
The very moment I made my ablutions at the spring of love,
I said the four takbirs over everything that exists.
Give me wine, and I will tell you the secret of destiny:
whose face I fell in love with, and by whose scent I am drunk.
Here the mountain's waist is slighter than an ant's;
do not despair of the door of mercy, O lover of wine.
Apart from that drunken narcissus, may no evil eye touch it,
no one under this turquoise vault has ever sat at ease.
May my soul be a ransom for her mouth, for in the garden of sight
the world's gardener never formed a sweeter bud than this.
Through the fortune of your love Hafez became a Solomon:
that is, from union with you he holds nothing in his hand but wind.
