Hafez · Ghazal 230 · If my heart draws me to wine

The faal · joy

The meadow is lovely, the air is mild, the wine is pure: now nothing more is needed but a happy heart. That line is the heart of your answer. Do not give up hope of kindness, for generous natures forgive and are gentle with those who love. What you have been given by nature needs no extra decoration. Hold the world's beauty lightly, since it belongs to no one for ever, and follow what your deepest conscience asks of you, whatever others say. Then let yourself enjoy the good that is already here.

The ghazal in English

If my heart draws me to musky wine, that is fitting,
for no scent of good comes from hypocritical piety.

Even if all the world's people forbid me love,
I will do what my Lord commands.

Do not give up hope of the bounty of grace, for those generous by nature
forgive sins and have mercy on lovers.

My heart keeps to the circle of remembrance in the hope
that a ring may be loosened from the tip of the beloved's curl.

You, who have God-given beauty and the bridal chamber of fortune,
what need have you for the tirewoman to adorn you?

The meadow is lovely, the air is charming, and the wine is pure;
now nothing is needed but a happy heart.

The bride of the world is a beauty, but take care,
for this veiled maiden enters no one's marriage bond.

I said to her, pleading, "O moon-faced one, what would it cost
if a weary heart found rest with one sweet taste from you?"

She laughed and said, "Hafez, for God's sake, do not wish
that your kiss should stain the face of the moon."
