Hafez · Ghazal 222 · Whoever leaves your lane in weariness
This ghazal speaks of a journey made under protection. If you are tempted to give up out of weariness, Hafez gently advises against it: stay near what you love, and do not leave in frustration. A traveller guarded by grace rests well and moves with dignity. You do not have to know the whole way yourself; it is wise to ask for guidance when you feel lost, and there is no shame in it. Do not let your time slip by idly, and do not judge yourself or others too early, since only the end shows the whole story. Drink from wisdom.
Whoever leaves your lane in weariness
will find his affairs do not prosper, and will leave in shame at last.
A caravan whose escort is the protection of God
rests in splendour and travels in majesty.
The wayfarer finds the road to the Friend by the light of guidance,
for he will reach nowhere if he travels in error.
Take what you desire from wine and the beloved before life ends;
what a pity if your time should pass entirely in idleness.
O guide of the lost heart, for God's sake, some help!
For if the stranger cannot find the way, he goes by a guide.
The verdict on the sober and the drunk rests on how they end;
no one knows in what state he will leave at the last.
Hafez, take a cup in your hand from the fountain of wisdom;
perhaps the image of ignorance will be washed from the tablet of your heart.
