Hafez · Ghazal 213 · The pearl of the treasury of secrets

This ghazal is a song of constancy. Whatever you are asking about, Hafez answers that the treasure is still where it was: the seal on the casket of love is unbroken, the scent still reaches you on the dawn breeze, and the sun still works in the mine even when no one comes to seek its gems. What you value has not been lost through time or neglect. Keep the trust you were given, stay faithful to what your heart knows, and return to it. The spring is flowing just as it always has.
The pearl in the treasury of secrets is just as it was;
the casket of love bears the same seal and the same sign as it did.
Lovers belong to the company of those who keep a trust,
and so the pearl-shedding eye is just as it was.
Ask the morning breeze: all night, until the breath of dawn,
the scent of your curl is my soul's companion, just as it was.
No one is seeking rubies and pearls, or else the sun
is at work in the mine and the quarry, just as it was.
Come and visit the one your glance has slain,
for the poor heart is as anxious as it was.
The colour of our heart's blood, which you keep hidden,
still shows on your ruby lip, just as it did.
I said your dark Hindu curl would not waylay me again;
years have gone, and it keeps the same habits as it did.
Hafez, tell once more the tale of the eye's bloody tears,
for at this spring the same water flows as it did.
