Hafez · Ghazal 210 · Last night our circle spoke of your tresses

The faal · love

Love is the talk of the evening in this ghazal, and even a message carried by the breeze is a blessing. You may have stepped out of a safe, quiet life because something or someone captured your heart. Hafez does not regret it; love, he says, is what woke the world. He also notices that his heart opens most when he is near what he loves. Seek that closeness and openness. And if a message arrives, however slight, receive it gratefully, as Hafez blessed the breeze.

The ghazal in English

Last night in our circle the story was of your tresses;
until the heart of the night, the talk was of the chain of your hair.

The heart, rolling in blood from the arrow of your lashes,
was longing once again for the bow-house of your eyebrows.

God bless the breeze, which brought a message from you,
or else we met no one who had come from your lane.

The world knew nothing of the tumult and trouble of love;
the troublemaker of the world was your sorcerer's glance.

I, the bewildered one, was once among the people of safety;
the snare upon my road was the twist of your dark curl.

Undo the fastening of your robe so that my heart may open,
for whatever openness I had came from being at your side.

By your faithfulness, pass by the grave of Hafez,
who left the world longing for your face.
