Something in your life may feel shut, like a door that has been closed against you, perhaps by others' narrowness. Hafez's answer is steady and hopeful: keep a strong heart, for what was closed for the sake of the self-righteous will be opened for the sake of God. Many locked doors open with the key of a sincere prayer said at dawn. Do not let disappointment push you into pretence; stay honest about who you are. The knot in your affairs can loosen, and it is more likely to loosen through patience than force.
Might it be that they will open the doors of the taverns,
and loosen the knot from our tangled affairs?
If they shut them to please the self-regarding zahid,
keep a strong heart, for they will open them for the sake of God.
By the purity of heart of the rends who drink at dawn,
many a closed door will be opened with the key of prayer.
Write a letter of condolence for the daughter of the vine,
so that all the young Magians let down their doubled curls.
Cut the harp's tresses in mourning for the death of pure wine,
so that all the companions let blood flow from their lashes.
They have shut the door of the tavern; O God, do not allow
that they open the door of the house of deceit and hypocrisy.
Hafez, this cloak you wear, tomorrow you will see
what zunnar they will cunningly untie from beneath it.
