In this playful dialogue every question receives a gracious answer, and the very first is "Gladly; whatever you say." It is a warm sign for your question. What you ask may cost something, but in this bargain there is little loss. Hafez also reminds you that happiness lies in making another heart glad, and that it is never too late: a single sweet kiss makes the old man young. Some things wait for their right hour, like the stars meeting in conjunction. Your prayer is in good company; the angels are saying it too.
I said, "When will your mouth and lips grant me my wish?"
She said, "Gladly; whatever you say, they will do."
I said, "Your lip demands the tribute of Egypt."
She said, "In this bargain there is little loss."
I said, "Who has found the way to the tiny dot of your mouth?"
She said, "That is a tale to tell to one who understands subtleties."
I said, "Do not worship idols; sit with the Eternal."
She said, "In the lane of love they do both this and that."
I said, "The air of the tavern takes grief from the heart."
She said, "Happy are those who make a heart glad."
I said, "Wine and the cloak are not the custom of the faith."
She said, "This is done in the faith of the Magian elder."
I said, "What use to an old man are ruby lips as sweet as honey?"
She said, "With a sugared kiss they make him young."
I said, "When will the master go into the bridal chamber?"
She said, "When Jupiter and the moon come into conjunction."
I said, "Prayer for his fortune is the litany of Hafez."
She said, "This prayer the angels of the seven heavens say."
