Hafez · Ghazal 188 · That meddler blames my rendi and love
Someone may be judging you, or you may be judging yourself, by your faults alone. Hafez asks you to look at the whole: see the perfection of love, not only the flaw; it is those without merit who look only for faults. The key to happiness, he says, is the acceptance of people of heart, so seek their company. And remember Moses, the shepherd of the valley of Ayman, who reached his goal only after years of faithful service. Patient, humble work prepares the way for what you hope for.
That meddler finds fault with me for rendi and love,
who objects to the secrets of the knowledge of the unseen.
See the perfection of love's secret, not the flaw of sin,
for whoever lacks merit looks only at faults.
The scent of the houris' perfume rises at the moment
when the dust of our tavern is made the fragrance of the collar.
The saqi's glance so waylays the road of faith
that only a Sohayb could keep from the wine.
The key to the treasure of happiness is the acceptance of the people of heart;
may no one doubt or question this point.
The shepherd of the valley of Ayman reaches his goal only
after serving Shoayb with his soul for some years.
The tale of Hafez makes blood drip from the eyes
when he remembers the time of youth and of old age.
