The faal · reconnection

Some silence has fallen between you and someone dear, and you may be wondering whether to send a message. Hafez admits that we cannot always cross the distance alone; sometimes kindness has to come a few steps from the other side too. Meanwhile, do not let the season pass unenjoyed. Be fair in your judgements, naming the good as well as the faults. And take the old tavern-master's advice: share the story of your heart only with those who can understand it. God is your friend, even while you wait.

The ghazal in English

You have written no word of how you are, and some days have passed;
where is a confidant, that I may send you a few messages?

We cannot reach that lofty goal
unless your kindness comes forward a few steps.

Now that the wine has gone from the jar to the jug and the rose has cast off her veil,
keep hold of the chance for joy and drink a few cups.

Sugar mixed with roses is no cure for our heart;
mix a few kisses with a few harsh words.

Ascetic, pass safely through the lane of the rends,
lest the company of a few of ill repute should ruin you.

Since you have told all the faults of wine, tell its virtues too;
do not deny wisdom to please a few common people.

O beggars of the tavern, God is your friend;
do not look for gifts from a few who are like cattle.

How well the elder of the tavern said to his drinker of dregs:
"Do not tell the state of a burned heart to the raw."

Hafez has burned with longing for your sun-bright face;
O fortunate one, cast a glance towards the unfortunate.
