The faal · welcome

This is a verse of homecoming and celebration. Someone or something you have missed may be returning, and the gathering brightens at the sound of their footsteps. Hafez is glad, and grateful that autumn's raiding left the garden whole. He gently recalls the promises made before the parting, so that the reunion rests on good faith. His counsel for you is simple: when you find your ark, the people and practices that keep you steady, hold on to them. With them beside you, the floods of change will not carry you away.

The ghazal in English

Saqi, may the coming of the Eid be blessed for you,
and may those promises you made not slip from your memory.

I wonder that, through all these days of separation,
you took your heart from your companions, and your heart allowed it.

Carry our service to the daughter of the vine; tell her: "Come out,
for our breath and our resolve have set you free from bonds."

The joy of the gathering is in your footsteps and your arrival;
may grief take the place of any heart that does not wish you joy.

Thank God that the plunder of autumn found no breach
in your garden of jasmine and cypress, rose and box-tree.

Far be the evil eye! From that scattering you were brought back
by your renowned star and the good fortune you were born with.

Hafez, do not let go of the blessing of this Noah's ark,
or the flood of events will sweep away your foundation.
