Hafez · Ghazal 179 · Good news has come
This is one of the most consoling ghazals in the Divan: good news has come that the days of grief will not last. That passed, and this too will pass. Whatever is weighing on you now is a page that will turn. Hafez also asks you to hold good times gently, like the candle with its moth, because they too are brief, and to spend what you have on kindness, since only the goodness of the generous remains. Do not lose hope; harshness leaves no lasting mark, and kindness does.
Good news has come that the days of grief will not last:
that did not last, and this too will not last.
Though I have become as dust in the beloved's eyes,
the rival too will not stay so honoured.
Since the doorkeeper strikes everyone down with the sword,
no one will remain dwelling in the sanctuary.
What room is there for thanks or complaint at a good or bad design,
when no writing will remain on the page of being?
They say the song in Jamshid's gathering was this:
"Bring the cup of wine, for Jam will not remain."
O candle, count the moth's union a blessing,
for this exchange will not last until the dawn.
O rich one, win the heart of your dervish,
for the treasury of gold and the hoard of coin will not remain.
On this emerald portico they have written in gold:
"Nothing will remain but the goodness of the generous."
Do not lose hope in the beloved's kindness, Hafez,
for the mark of cruelty and the trace of injustice will not remain.
