Hafez · Ghazal 177 · Not everyone who lights up a face

The faal · sincerity

This ghazal reminds you that appearances are not the same as the real thing: a tilted cap does not make a king, and a shaved head does not make a dervish. If you are weighing a person or a path, look for faithfulness and justice rather than shine. And in your own giving, do not serve only for the reward; the Friend knows how to care for those who give freely. True worth, like a rare pearl, is recognised by those who know. Be patient until the right eyes see you.

The ghazal in English

Not everyone who lights up a face knows how to win hearts;
not everyone who makes a mirror knows how to be Alexander.

Not everyone who tilts his cap and sits up proudly
knows the bearing of the crown and the ways of sovereignty.

Do not serve like beggars, on condition of a wage,
for the Friend himself knows how to care for those who serve.

I am the servant of the aspiration of that rend who burns his own safety,
who, in the guise of a beggar, knows the art of alchemy.

Faith and keeping promises are good, if you will learn them;
otherwise, anyone you meet knows how to be cruel.

I lost my mad heart, and I did not know
that a child of Adam could know the ways of a fairy.

There are a thousand points here finer than a hair;
not everyone who shaves his head knows how to be a qalandar.

The centre of my sight is fixed on your mole,
for only the jeweller knows the worth of a peerless pearl.

Whoever has become king of the fair by stature and face
will take the world, if he knows how to give justice.

Only one is aware of the charm of Hafez's verse
who knows grace of nature and the speaking of Dari.
