Spring has arrived in this ghazal: the trees turn green, the birds sing, and the breeze brings good news to the wine-seller. Hafez passes on a message he heard at dawn: listen with the ear of your mind, and make room for joy. If your thoughts have been scattered, gather them again; when the dark voice leaves, the angel's voice arrives. Keep the most precious things for those who truly understand them, like the lily that knows when to be silent. A season of gladness is open to you; walk towards it.
The breeze came to congratulate the old wine-seller:
the season of joy, delight, grace and drinking has come.
The air has the Messiah's breath, the wind opens the musk-pod;
the tree has turned green, and the bird breaks into song.
The spring wind has so kindled the tulip's oven
that the bud is drenched in sweat and the rose is brought to the boil.
Hear me with the ear of the mind, and strive for joy,
for at dawn this word came to my ear from the hidden voice.
Come back from scattered thoughts, so you may be gathered,
by the rule that when Ahriman departs, Sorush arrives.
I do not know what the free lily heard
from the bird of dawn, that with ten tongues it fell silent.
Is the gathering of intimates a place for strangers' company?
Cover the mouth of the cup, for the cloak-wearer has come.
Hafez is going from the khanqah to the tavern;
perhaps he has woken from the drunkenness of false piety.
