Hafez · Ghazal 173 · In my prayer, your eyebrow

Hafez catches the scent of better days: the wine has cleared, the breeze is glad, and the work is set on its true foundation. If you have a gift or a talent that has felt neglected, this ghazal speaks directly to you: O bride of art, do not complain of fortune; make ready, for the one who will receive you has come. Prepare your work and your heart with care. And learn from the cypress, which stands upright because it carries no heavy attachments. Set down some worry, and joy will find room.
In my prayer the curve of your eyebrow came to mind;
such a state came over me that the prayer-niche cried out.
Do not look to me now for patience, heart or reason,
for all the endurance you once saw has gone to the wind.
The wine has cleared and the birds of the meadow are drunk;
it is the season of love, and the work is set on its foundation.
I catch the scent of better days in the state of the world;
the rose has brought joy, and the morning breeze has come glad.
O bride of art, do not complain of fortune;
adorn the bridal chamber of beauty, for the groom has come.
The flower beauties have all put on their ornaments;
it is our beloved who has come with God-given beauty.
The trees that cling to things are bowed beneath their load;
how happy the cypress, that has come free of the burden of grief.
Minstrel, sing a fine ghazal from the words of Hafez,
so I may say the time of joy has come back to my mind.
