Hafez · Ghazal 157 · Come out from behind the veil

The faal · the present moment

"Come out for a moment, like the rose and the wine," Hafez says, "for there may not be another meeting." If there is someone you have been meaning to see, or a feeling you have kept behind a veil, the verse gently urges you not to wait. Love that runs this deep does not leave its circle; it marks the heart for good. Seek the shade where your restless heart finds rest, and do not take another's pride too much to heart.

The ghazal in English

Whoever has a passion for your fresh green down
will not step outside this circle as long as he lives.

When I rise from the dust of the grave like the tulip,
the brand of longing for you will be the dark core of my heart.

Where are you, after all, O peerless pearl,
that from grief for you the eyes of everyone are a sea?

Water runs from the root of every lash of mine; come,
if you have a fancy for a stream's edge and a pleasant view.

Like the rose and wine, come out from behind the veil for a moment and come in,
for there may not be another meeting.

May the long shade of your curl's curve be over my head,
for in this shade the frenzied heart finds rest.

Your eye, from pride, does not incline towards Hafez; yes,
haughtiness is the way of the lovely narcissus.
