The faal · clarity

Each line of this ghazal says what becomes possible once you do something simple. The rose opens when you serve it gently, like the breeze. Dust becomes gold through humility. The beloved's beauty has no veil at all; only the dust of the road needs to settle for you to see it. If you feel stuck, Hafez suggests stepping a little outside your habits and asking those with insight for help. Take one step on the road you are drawn to; the gain comes with the walking.

The ghazal in English

You will be able to look into the cup of Jamshid only when
you can make the dust of the tavern the collyrium of your eyes.

Do not be without wine and minstrel, for beneath the vault of heaven
with this song you can drive grief out of your heart.

The rose of your desire will lift its veil only when
you can serve it as the dawn breeze does.

Begging at the tavern door is a rare elixir;
if you practise it, you can turn dust into gold.

Resolved upon the stages of love, take a step forward,
for you will gain much if you can make this journey.

You, who will not step outside the house of nature,
how can you pass into the lane of the Path?

The beloved's beauty has no veil or curtain, but
settle the dust of the road so that you can see.

Come, for the cure, the joy of presence and the ordering of affairs
you can find through the grace of those with insight.

But as long as you want the beloved's lip and the cup of wine,
do not hope to be able to do anything else.

O heart, if you gain awareness from the light of guidance,
like the candle you can give up your head, laughing.

If you heed this kingly counsel, Hafez,
you will be able to pass onto the high road of truth.
