Hafez · Ghazal 139 · I laid my face on her path

The faal · grace

You have waited on someone's path, hoping for kindness, and the glance has not come. Hafez knows this well; his tears could not soften the stone. Yet notice his response: he prays for the one who ignores him, asking God to keep them safe. That generosity is the counsel here. Do not let unanswered hope turn into resentment. Keep your secrets with dignity, as the pen does, and keep your heart soft even where others are hard. What is given freely is never wasted.

The ghazal in English

I laid my face upon her path, and she did not pass my way;
I hoped for a hundred kindnesses, and she did not cast a single glance.

The flood of our tears did not wash the rancour from her heart;
on hard granite the raindrop left no mark.

O Lord, protect that bold young one
who did not beware the arrow of the recluses' sighs.

Last night fish and bird could not sleep for my lament,
yet see that saucy-eyed one, who did not lift her head from sleep.

I wanted to die at her feet like a candle;
but she never passed our way, like the dawn breeze.

My soul, who is so stony-hearted and so worthless
as not to make his life a shield before the blow of your sword?

The tongue-cut pen of Hafez never told your secret
to anyone in company, until it gave up its head.
