Hafez · Ghazal 137 · She took my heart

The faal · dignity

Someone has drawn your heart and then turned their face away, and the loneliness may feel sharp. Hafez notices that even on such nights, the image of the one you love offers boundless kindness. He calls on the morning breeze: if there is a remedy, now is the time. And he keeps a quiet dignity: among kind people, one does not list the beloved's faults. Speak gently of those who have hurt you, accept comfort where it is offered, and let the breeze bring what it can.

The ghazal in English

She took my heart and hid her face from me;
for God's sake, with whom can one play such a game?

The night of my loneliness was out for my life;
her image showed me boundless kindnesses.

Why should I not be bleeding-hearted like the tulip,
when her narcissus eye turned haughtily from us?

To whom can I say that, with this soul-burning pain,
my physician has designs on my feeble life?

I burned like a candle in such a way that over me
the flask wept and the lute cried out.

O breeze, if you have a remedy, now is the time,
for the pain of longing has designs on my life.

Among the kind-hearted, how can one say
that our beloved said this and did that?

The enemy would not have done to the soul of Hafez
what the arrow of that bow-browed one's eye has done.
