Hafez · Ghazal 129 · If wine did not carry off our grief

The faal · relief

There are times when the weight of events would sweep away anyone's footing, and Hafez does not pretend otherwise. His counsel is to let the anchor of overthinking rise a little, so the boat can move through the whirlpool. Look for a guide through the dark, and go out to the meadow, where even a gentle breeze can revive you. The remedy offered here is ease, and a letting go of anxious thoughts. If no one has carried your message yet, the breeze still might.

The ghazal in English

If wine did not carry the heart's grief from our memory,
the shock of events would sweep our foundations away.

If reason did not lower its anchor in drunkenness,
how would the boat come through this whirlpool of trouble?

Alas, the heavens have played behind everyone's back,
and there was no one who could win a hand against this cheat.

The way leads through the darkness; where is a Khizr to guide us?
May the fire of deprivation not take away our honour.

My weak heart draws me to the edge of the meadow
because the soul escapes from death through the languid breeze.

I am love's physician: give wine, for this remedy
brings ease and carries away mistaken thoughts.

Hafez burned, and no one told the beloved of his state;
perhaps the breeze, for God's sake, will carry a message.
