Hafez · Ghazal 127 · Brighter than the moon
The beauty you are drawn to outshines the moon, and Hafez admits that the corner of a single eyebrow is a better home than any palace. He also counsels restraint: a mirror clouds with a sigh, and a delicate heart cannot bear loud complaint, so carry your feeling quietly for now. You are not alone in this; everyone bears some mark of love. Raise a glass to the teacher who needs no building, the wisdom that lives in plain places, and do not be ashamed of your devotion.
The moon has not the brightness of your face;
beside you the rose has no more lustre than grass.
The corner of your eyebrow is my soul's dwelling;
no king has a corner pleasanter than this.
Let us see what the smoke of my heart will do to your face;
you know a mirror cannot bear the breath of a sigh.
See the boldness of the narcissus, which blossomed in front of you:
the brazen eye has no manners in its looking.
I have seen it: that black-hearted eye of yours
does not look towards any friend.
Give me a heavy measure, disciple of the tavern,
to the joy of a sheikh who has no khanqah.
Swallow your blood and sit in silence, for that delicate heart
cannot bear the cry of one who seeks justice.
Tell him to go and wash his sleeve in the blood of his heart,
whoever has no way to this threshold.
I am not the only one to suffer the tyranny of your curl;
who is there who does not bear the brand of that darkness?
If Hafez has bowed down before you, do not find fault:
the unbeliever of love, my idol, commits no sin.
