The faal · the present moment

The water of life that Khizr found is not far away, this verse says; it is in the cup in your hand, in the moment you are living now. Lay the thread of your life there and let it find its order. Others may choose caution or show; you are asked which of these the one you love would truly prefer. Keep a morning and evening practice of remembering what is beautiful to you. What seems small, held fully, can be a kingdom.

The ghazal in English

Whoever holds the cup in hand
holds the kingship of Jamshid forever.

The water from which Khizr found life,
seek it in the tavern, for the cup holds it.

Lay the thread of your life upon the cup,
for this thread takes its order from it.

We and wine, the zahids and piety:
let us see which of them the beloved will choose.

Apart from your lip, saqi, there is no one
in this round who has their heart's desire.

The narcissus has borrowed
all its ways of drunkenness from your lovely eye.

The mention of your face and curl
is a litany my heart recites morning and evening.

On the wounded breasts of those in pain
your ruby lip is the perfect salt.

In the well of your chin, my soul, like Hafez,
your beauty holds two hundred slaves.
