Hafez · Ghazal 115 · Plant the tree of friendship
The counsel here is plain and kind: plant friendship, and pull up enmity while it is still a sapling. Treat the people around you with respect, even those others look down on. Count this night of good company as a gift, for the world will keep turning long after it. Hafez wishes for little in the end: a stream, a cypress, someone dear beside him. Ask for the spring of your own life, and tend the friendships that will bear fruit.
Plant the tree of friendship, for it bears the heart's desire as fruit;
uproot the sapling of enmity, for it brings countless pains.
As a guest of the tavern, treat the rends with respect,
for, my dear, you will suffer a headache if drunkenness brings a hangover.
Count the night of companionship a gift, for after our time
the heavens will turn many times and bring many nights and days.
The one who guides Leyli's litter, who commands the moon's own cradle,
for God's sake, put it into his heart to pass by Majnun.
Wish, O heart, for the spring of life; otherwise this meadow every year
bears a hundred flowers like the eglantine, and a thousand nightingales.
For God's sake, since my wounded heart has made a pact with your curl,
command your honeyed ruby lip to bring it soon to rest.
In this garden Hafez asks God for nothing more, now in his old age,
than to sit at the edge of a stream with a cypress in his arms.
