Hafez · Ghazal 112 · He who gave your face its colour

The faal · contentment

The same hand that made beauty, this ghazal says, can also give you patience and calm. If the treasure you hoped for has not come, Hafez points you to the corner of contentment, a gift no less real, given to beggars as gold is given to kings. The world dresses like a lovely bride, but do not hand over your whole life as her price. Spring's good news has arrived: sit by the stream, near the cypress, and let simple things restore you. What you ask for quietly can still be given.

The ghazal in English

He who gave your face the colour of the rose and the eglantine
can also give patience and calm to wretched me.

And He who taught your tresses the custom of plunder
can, in His generosity, also give justice to sorrowful me.

I gave up all hope of Farhad on the very day
he gave the reins of his frenzied heart to Shirin's lips.

If there is no treasure of gold, the corner of contentment remains;
He who gave kings that, gave beggars this.

The world is a lovely bride to look at, but
whoever is joined with her gives his own life as her dowry.

From now on, my hand and the hem of the cypress, and the bank of the stream,
above all now that the east wind has brought the good news of Farvardin.

In the grip of the world's sorrows the heart of Hafez has turned to blood
from separation from your face, O Khwaja Qavam al-Din: justice!
