The faal · protection

This ghazal is a prayer for someone's well-being, a wish that no harm or sorrow should touch them, outwardly or inwardly. Take it as a blessing over you and over those you care for. Hafez wishes that autumn find no path to the upright cypress, and that unkind eyes find no room in your gathering. Let gentle words and good company be part of your care for yourself and others. Know that you are wished well, and that your well-being matters to more people than you may realise.

The ghazal in English

May your body never need the care of physicians;
may your delicate being never be touched by harm.

The well-being of all the horizons lies in your well-being:
may no ailment ever bring pain to your person.

The beauty of form and meaning comes from the safety of your health:
may your outward self never be gloomy, nor your inward self sad.

When autumn comes into this meadow to plunder,
may it find no road to the tall, upright cypress.

In that gathering where your beauty begins to show itself,
may there be no room for the taunts of the ill-seeing and ill-wishing.

Whoever looks on your moon-like face with the evil eye,
may nothing but his own soul be the rue-seed on your fire.

Seek healing from the sugar-scattering words of Hafez,
so you will have no need of a cure of rosewater and candy.
