Your Remembrance Refreshes the Lovers

Jami

O you whose remembrance refreshes the soul of lovers!

By the water of your grace the tongue of lovers is kept moist!

From you a shadow has fallen upon the world

and become the wealth of the beautiful.

Lovers are those who have fallen in that shadow;

they are left in longing for that wealth.

Until the secret of that beauty showed itself in Layli,

love for her set no fire to Majnun.

A note for readers

The opening couplets of Salaman and Absal, a short allegorical masnavi in Jami’s Haft Awrang about a prince and the nurse he loves, read as the soul’s bond with the body. The prologue addresses God as the source of all beauty, whose ‘shadow’ falls on human beloveds such as Layli, the beloved of Majnun.
