Your pistachio mouth laughed at sugar

Hafez

O you whose pistachio mouth has laughed at the tale of sugar,

I long for you: for God's sake, smile one sugared smile.

The Tuba tree of paradise dares not speak beside your stature;

I will leave this story, for the talk is growing too long.

If you want no river of blood to rise from your eyes,

do not bind your heart to the faithfulness of fickle people.

Whether you show your beauty or taunt us,

we are no followers of the self-admiring shaykh.

How could anyone know how distraught I am

whose heart was never caught in this lasso?

The market of longing is busy; where is that cypress-statured one,

that I may cast my soul like wild rue on the fire of that face?

Where our beloved speaks with a sugared laugh,

O pistachio, who are you? For God's sake, do not make yourself ridiculous.

Hafez, since you will not give up the glances of the Turks,

do you know where your place is? Khwarazm or Khojand.
