Your curl bound a thousand hearts

Hafez

Your curl bound a thousand hearts with a single strand of hair;

it closed the road of a thousand healers on all four sides.

So that lovers might give up their lives for the scent of its breeze,

it opened a musk-pod and closed the door of hope.

I went mad because my lovely one, like the new moon,

showed her eyebrow, showed herself off, and veiled her face.

The saqi poured wine into the cup in many colours;

see these pictures, how beautifully he sealed them in the gourd.

O Lord, what glance did the flask give, that the jar's blood

was stopped in its throat in the middle of its gurgling cries?

What mode did the minstrel play, that within the veil of the sama

he closed the door of shouting on the people of ecstasy?

Hafez, whoever did not practise love yet wished for union

put on the pilgrim's robe to circle the Kaaba of the heart without ablution.
