You who have all you wish

Hafez

You who have everything you could wish for in the world,

what care have you for the state of the weak and helpless?

Ask your servant for heart and soul, and take my life,

for your command runs over the heads of the free.

You have no waist, and I wonder that every hour

you take the centre of the gathering of the fair.

No design is worthy of the white page of your face,

since you have black script of musky down on the Judas flower.

Drink wine, for you are always light-spirited and gentle,

especially in those moments when your head is heavy.

Reproach no more, and wrong our heart no more;

do not do all that you can, though you have every right.

If you choose, you have a hundred thousand arrows of cruelty

in your bow, aimed at my wounded life.

Always bear the rivals' cruelty and the envious one's wrong,

for that is easy, if you have a kind friend.

If union with the Friend is granted you for even a moment,

go, for you have everything you could wish for in the world.

Hafez, since you are carrying roses in your skirt from this garden,

why worry about the gardener's cries and protest?
