You are like the morning

Hafez

You are like the morning, and I am the candle of the dawn's solitude;

smile once, and see how I give up my life.

Since the brand of your unruly curl is set in my heart this way,

my grave will become a bed of violets when I am gone.

I have opened the door of my eyes on the threshold of your wishes,

hoping you would cast one glance; instead you cast me from your sight.

How shall I thank you, O troop of sorrows? God reward you,

for on the day of loneliness, at least, you do not leave me.

I am the servant of the pupil of my eye, which, black-hearted as it is,

rains a thousand drops when I recount my heart's pain.

Our idol shows herself in every glance, but

no one sees the grace that I am seeing.

If the Friend passes like the wind over the dust of Hafez,

in that narrow place, from longing, I will tear my shroud.
