Without the beloved's beauty
Hafez
Without the beauty of the beloved, the soul has no desire for the world;
whoever lacks this, truly, lacks that as well.
I have seen no trace of that heart-stealer in anyone;
either I have no news, or she leaves no trace.
Every dewdrop on this road is a hundred seas of fire;
alas, this riddle has no explanation or account.
The station of ease is not something to let slip from your hand;
camel-driver, set down the load, for this road has no end.
The harp, bent with age, calls you to pleasure;
listen, for the counsel of the old will do you no harm.
O heart, learn the ways of the rend from the muhtasib:
he is drunk, and no one suspects him of it.
The tale of Qarun's treasure, which time scattered to the wind,
recite into the ear of the heart, so that it keeps no gold hidden.
Even if the candle is your watchman, hide your secrets from it,
for that saucy one with the severed head cannot hold its tongue.
No one in the world has a single servant like Hafez,
because no one in the world has a king like you.
